Oh the pleasures and the potential of spending time in a library.
The library has air conditioning, books galore and most of the updated devices that seem to make the modern world go around.
I am writing this post from a library now and plan to spend some significant time sitting and reading at a library in the very near future.
It is a definite good idea for you to do the same.

Many years after Bob Costas received the audio tape of game 7 of the 1960 World Series, played on a Thursday, my phone rang while driving on a Thursday.
That night Costas, as ever and never to be taken for granted, was great hosting a long lost video of the television broadcast of that famed game.
I answered the phone. It was Mr. Costas calling back. Talk turned to the audio, the radio broadcast of game 7 1960 W.S. by Chuck Thompson and Jack Quinlan.
Costas cited Quinlan on that day, as one of the greatest baseball broadcasters ever, I believe Bob said one of the top ten.
I say top 5, he starts the broadcast and is superb in calling Rocky Nelson’s 2 run home run and Bill Virdon’s 2 run single.
The Pirates are off, (4-0) there was and is more to come, recalling this masterpiece.

In continuing with part 3 of comments and thoughts about the classic 7th game of the 1960 World Series, I will “let” the Baseball Almanac give details of the middle part of the game.
The vaunted New York Yankees fought back and took a (7-4) lead to the bottom of the eighth inning. The “Almanac” erroneously reported the score as (7-5) and also the Yankees did not follow “suite” but suit. Their account follows below.
Vern Law and the rest of the Pirates showed why they were still there by rolling over New York to take an early 4-0 lead. However, the Yankees came back with key performances at the plate by Bill Skowron, Mantle and Yogi Berra who shot to a 5-4 lead going into the eighth inning. They continued to lead 7-5 and looked to be in great shape as reliever Bobby Shantz appeared at the top of his game. Fortunately for the Pirates, appearances can sometimes be deceiving.
Gino Cimoli led off the Pittsburgh eighth with a pinch-single and Bill Virdon hit a sharp grounder toward Yankees’ shortstop, Tony Kubek. After the speeding ball took a bad hop and struck Kubek in the throat (resulting in a single), Joe DeMaestri was summoned to replace him as both Pirates remained on base. Dick Groat followed with another single cutting the lead to 7-5 and Roberto Clemente kept the rally going with an infield hit that scored Virdon and advanced Groat to third. Now trailing 7-6,

The Washington Nationals have won 9 of 13 games vs the New York Mets accounting for 5 of their 6 game lead over the Mets in the N.L. East. The Miami Marlins are also 6 games behind Washington in the division.
Washington had a 6 game lead after completing a 3 game sweep vs the Mets in Washington D.C. 11 days ago.
Now the Dusty Baker (he is a superb regular season manager) managed “Wash” team should not look back and in fact, look to climb in their N.L. seeding.
However, knowing baseball and recalling the inconsistent Nationals’ first half, figure at least one more drop by them enabling the Mets and maybe the Marlins to get closer, close, but I say not ahead.

There are so many little things that made Joe DiMaggio great.
Most of all, he gave his all in every game, stating once that there may have been someone seeing him play for the first time.
He struggled later in his career especially playing a day game after a night game.
Of course he endured, one of the 5 greatest players ever, an unbelievable winner with the New York Yankees.
DiMaggio was in 10 World Series with the Yankees, winning 9 of them. Maybe that coffee, the great Yankees “clubhouse man,” Pete Sheehy had ready for “Joe D” helped a bit.

Joe did well with coffee.

The Detroit Tigers have not won a World Series since 1984. That of course is 32 years, 16 until 2000 and 16 now.
They have won multiple one eighth division titles but nary a World Series game since defeating the San Diego Padres in game 5 of the 1984 World Series.
Detroit was swept in 4 straight W.S. games by the San Francisco Giants in the 2010 Fall (not so) Classic.
As was the case with the most recent title clinchers in major league baseball, the NHL and NBA, that 2010 World Series and in fact the last Tigers’ winning World Series in 1984 ended on Sundays.

Now the first part of a look at the classic game 7 of the 1960 World Series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees.
Going into the game the Yankees had outscored the Buccos by a wide margin but of course it all came down to one game.
In 1981 during the baseball strike, WABC Radio, then the home of the New York Yankees, rebroadcast the game as well as other great World Series games from the past.
In 1989 I brought an audio tape of the game to the great broadcaster Bob Costas (one reason he is great at what he does is that Mr. Costas has a reverence for the great radio broadcasters of the past).
He was standing with broadcasters Ernie Harwell and Jon Miller and said somewhat gleefully that he just received a tape of game 7 of the 1960 World Series.

I recently discovered a great, highly creative website called SuperFanWorld.
It is a sanctuary for Howard Stern and professional wrestling fans. There are constant updates on both as well as information on upcoming events, including SuperFanWorld’s first comedy festival which will be held on August 7th at the legendary Broadway Comedy Club in New York City.
Additionally there is great information regarding games and so much more.
Reading SuperFanWorld has become an every day pleasure for me and I advise you to do the same.

Oh what a big win for the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Another thought, was it that big?
Despite a (5-14) slump before yesterday’s win at Pittsburgh vs the Pirates, the Cubs still had a six and a half game lead in the National League Central Division.
Now at the All-Star break, Chicago is (53-35) leading the St. Louis Cardinals by 7 games and the Pirates by 7 and a half games in the divisional race.
In the “standings” for National League “tournament” seeding, the San Francisco Giants lead both the Cubs and Washington Nationals by 3 games.
