’42 World Series Notes

In the clinching game of the 1942 World Series, with the game (#5) tied (2-2) and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals leading the series 3 games to 1, both Stan Musial and pitcher John Beazley made fine defensive plays yielding the first two Yankees’ outs as the game went to the top of the ninth still tied.

Both Mel Allen who called the final half and Walter “Red” Barber were the game’s radio announcers.

St. Louis won game 5 and the title, riding Whitey Kurowski’s homer T9, to clinch the crown.

It was the only Yankees’ World Series loss from 1927-1954 when they were an incredible (15-1) in the Fall Classic.
