Book Expo And Some Great Reading/Product Suggestions

During a whirlwind trek around the New York Book Expo held recently at The Javits Center in New York City, I came away with good memories of friendly people, with some books and websites, I think would be good summer reads.

Among them Lostandfoundinspace.com,  which has some great photos and memorabilia for sale and certainly at which to gaze. There is much about many memorable television shows including “Lost in Space,” and “The Munsters.” Both proprietor Debbie, her husband Jeff (see below) agreed with me regarding the great, personable, talented Al Lewis, speaking of “The Munsters.”

Jeffrey H. Herman is a fine literary agent. Jeff@jeffherman.com

Some great advanced technology in a compact speaker for noise reduction is what manifests from “Sounds True,” with Christine day as their marketing manager.

Janelle Gabay has written a fantasy thriller titled “First Born.” Check her website. It is http://www.janellegabaybooks.com

Great sports book are available at TriumphBooks.com

The Brooklyn Film Festival Is Great

The Brooklyn Film Festival running through next Saturday June 11th is an extraordinary event with films that are truly amazing.

I attended on opening night, two nights ago, at one of the venues, The Wythe Hotel, and enjoyed an after party with great food and drinks.

However, as good as that was and it was, the film, “Entanglement” was the highlight, as I loved this film.

It was really provocative, creative and had a great cast. There is a great plot, humor and pathos a film evoking the pleasure of a great, say, black and white cookie and then some.

A pair of  “Jasons” director Jason James  and writer Jason Filiatrault, will surely be “back” after their great work in “Entanglement.”

The cast included stars, Thomas Middleditch and Jess Weixler and a great supporting effort from Diana Bang. The whole cast, again, was splendid.

(2-0) NHL Series Notes

Going into tonight’s predicted, NBC rooting for,Nashville win, the team down (2-0) in the Stanley Cup final, has won eight of the last ten times in that situation, eight of nine times when returning home, which “Nash,” having not played all that bad in “Pitts,” is doing tonight.

The last NHL Final sweep in ’98 was the fourth consecutive one from (’95-’98) and also that final manifested in the last repeat NHL champion, the Detroit Red Wings.

Since that time only eventual champion Los Angeles, (Kings) in both 2012 and 2014, vs New York/New Jersey area teams, at home vs New Jersey in ’12 and at the New York Rangers in ’14, has taken the commanding (3-0) series lead.

Both times, L.A. lost game 4, before winning in 5 in ’14, clinching on Alex Martinez’ overtime goal and in 6 games in ’12.

Teams up (2-0) after the ’98 “Vogues”/Red Wings, that failed to go up (3-0) are the ’03 Devils, ’06 Carolina Hurricanes with current “Nash” coach Peter Laviolette, behind their bench, the ’07 Anaheim Ducks, both the ’08 and ’09 Red Wings, each time vs “Pitts,” the ’10 Chicago Blackhawks vs Laviolette’s “Philly” Flyers, the ’11 Vancouver Canucks and ’15 Pittsburgh Penguins.

In ’09 the Penguins and in ’11 the Boston Bruins came back to win the title, while the other six teams, up (2-0) won the Stanley Cup Final.

NBA Look What You Have Done To Me

Despite the off the charts, ABC/ESPN hype, the NBA Finals are not only not great, but essentially, no contest games and have been for the great majority of the now 14 such games between the Warriors and Cavs, a pair of teams, the ’80’s Lakers and Celtics and ’90’s Bulls would have prevailed vs (an opinion, of course).

Sure last year it went 7, (Adam Silver helped that by suspending Dray Green for game 5) and was close, but how many others have been?

Unofficially, none of the 14 tilts (6 in ’15 when GS won in 6, clearly covering in games (4-6) and I believe in the overtime game one, certainly all seven last year and last night’s opening GS rout win) and at most one, have manifested in a favorite wins/no cover result.

Kevin Durant, a great player, annexed by the aforementioned 73 win/no title Warriors, led the G.S. game one rout, the still lesser of the two evils, result I prefer.

What I can only dream of is a GS sweep a la ’75. Unfortunately the NBA, ABC/Disney/ESPN and likely and legitimately, the Cavs themselves are too powerful for that wanted result. They may even win the series, which after last year’s horror, really will not add to the “pain.”

No the pain is in hearing how great everything is from Mike Breen, Rachel Nichols and others, part of the hype for a league/5 man sport (thus most affected by buying players), in which the clearly best, albeit non title team of a year ago, was allowed (perhaps as makeup for the Silver “result tampering, SPORTS certainly NOT real, atrocity,” to get a player added, that is truly valuable/great.

I knocked the NBA Finals, now just add this Cleveland title series opening game loss to the facts from a posts before and after Cleveland finally hosted a title series opening game, that in the 2016 World Series.

Foley’s, THE Place In New York, For Pittsburgh Penguins’ Fans To Watch The Stanley Cup Final

There is another great association regarding the likely, far from definite repeat champion, Pittsburgh Penguins. It is the New York based, Pens’ fans establishment, Foley’s N.Y. (18 West 33rd Street), a truly great place to watch all sports and have fun.

Billed as an Irish bar with a baseball attitude, there are so many good things concerning Foley’s including great food and drink, an unbelievable memorabilia collection and yes an intensity for the Penguins, as all games are featured there with their fans dressed as though we were in “The Igloo,” a reference to the great franchise’s first home.

So if you are a Pens’ fan, or just want to see the Stanley Cup Final games with the equivalent of a great home crowd, come to Foley’s, say Saturday night at 8 or so, for game three and/or any of the remaining games, vs the upstart 16th ranked (the Pens were second in regular season points), Nashville Predators.

Overtime Game 7 NHL Semis Notes

Last Thursday, an NHL semi-final game 7 went into overtime for the seventh time, with the Pittsburgh Penguins prevailing vs the Ottawa Senators, on Chris Kunitz’ goal in the second overtime period.

Five of the previous six game 7/semis overtime winners prevailed in the subsequent Stanley Cup Final series.

Only a first year expansion team, the 1968 St. Louis Blues, qualifying for the final from a division consisting of the first six NHL expansion teams, on Ron Schock’s overtime goal, failed to win in the subsequent final.

The 1939 Boston Bruins, 1950 Detroit Red Wings, 1979 Montreal Canadiens, 1994 New York Rangers and 2014 Los Angeles Kings all “titled” after game 7 wins in the NHL semi-finals.

This might be a bit much but you know me: “M”el Hill won the ’39 semi for the Bruins in #7 OT vs the Rangers. Boston then defeated Toronto for the crown.

In 1950, Detroit’s “L”eo Reise won game 7/semis with an overtime goal vs the Toronto Maple Leafs, before the Red Wings won it all on Pete Babando’s overtime goal in game 7 of the final vs the New York Rangers. (Four years later, another Detroit player, Tony Leswick also scored in overtime in #7/final vs the Montreal Canadiens, the only other time game 7 of the final went into overtime.)

Forty years after the first overtime game seven of the semis, in by the way, the first best of seven NHL semi final (that year was also the first best of seven NHL final), Montreal defeated Boston on Yvon “L”ambert’s overtime goal in game 7 of the semis. The Habs won an incredible 15th title in 24 seasons by defeating the New York Rangers in the final.

In 1994, it was the Rangers, who won game 7 of their “semi” vs the New Jersey Devils in overtime(s) on a goal by Steph “M”atteau. New York won by one goal in game 7 of the final vs the Vancouver Canucks to claim the title for the first time in 54 years, their only one in the last 76 NHL seasons.

Twenty years later, the Los Angeles Kings’ Alex “M”artinez scored an overtime goal in game 7 at Chicago, vs the Blackhawks, to win that “semi,” before scoring in overtime of game 5/final vs the Rangers, to give L.A. a second “crown” (pun intended), in three seasons.

As you can see all 5 players that scored overtime game 7/semis goals for teams that went on to win the final have one of the two consecutive in the alphabet letters, “L” or “M,” in either their first or last names.

Additionally, all 5 of those scenarios (a team winning game 7 of an NHL “semi” in overtime and then winning the final) involved the New York Rangers, as either a semifinal or final series participant.

Finally the Pittsburgh Penguins are close to two and a half to one favorites to “indoctrinate” “the not far in the alphabet,” Chris “K”unitz in this unique, albeit, perhaps overstated, history/trivia.

Jake Guentzel’s Late Third Period Goal Lifts Pens In NHL Final Opener

Last night’s Pittsburgh Penguins’ NHL final series opening win vs the Nashville Predators might not have happened if P.K. Subban’s opening goal would have counted, as it should have.

The Penguins are a near great team and likely I will anoint them as great, as I believe they will win the title, as stated last week here.

However, the good but not great, and certainly NOT all time great announcer, Mike Emrick’s “Pittsburgh thing” and comments are getting to me.

He “slipped” in talking of the series going 7, 6 or 5, never saying four. The man who to his credit, hauled his briefcase to early N.J. Devils’ games in his “hustle” for work, would be happy for “his” Pens but not his NBC with a sweep.

Next he joked about Kunitz’ goal in #7 semis and apologized for an obscenity that got through from the “miked” Nashville dressing room.

We try to avoid those things said Emrick. Really, then do not chance the locker room “rah, rah” segment.

Gee was Mike Sullivan ever insightful in saying the Pens got a lift from the Subban goal being nullified. “No bleep, Sherlock.”

I am not quite ready to roll out the Pittsburgh final round mark, nor give them the title, as first off after a tough loss, maybe “Nash” gets the “wood” and it counts in #2, with almost surely an NBC “fix”/Nash crowd, gets the Preds #3, if they are down (2-0).

Maybe it is even (2-1) Nash, but more likely, not, and I say “Pitts” in 6 or less, knowing Emrick/NBC would love Pitts in 7. They got it the last two rounds and what Emrick/NBC/Bettman want, unfortunately as in life, as powers, they get.

I actually started this (3-0) Pitts, went to sleep (3-1) and was not surprised the “computer” voice (oh do I miss my pager!) said Pitts first.

However, my disgust increased greatly knowing I missed a game in which for the second straight Memorial Day Final opener, a team in its first final (last year San Jose down (2-0) tied it only to lose when Nick Bonino scored late in the third period) overcame a multiple goal deficit only to lose at Pitts (the Pens are (11-4) in home finals tilts) on a late third period goal, this as shown in the title by rookie Jake Guentzel, his 10th in these ‘offs.

Bonino had 2 goals, one completely lucky and an empty net goal, while Con Sheary, (he won #2 Final last year in OT), and the great Evgeni Malkin also had Pittsburgh goals.

The team winning game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final is (35-13) in the 48 previous post expansion title round series.

On what would have been President Kennedy’s (Jack) 100th birthday, it was JAKE Guentzel, pictured above, who had THE goal as the Penguins “opened” the Predators.

Perhaps Marilyn with Jackie in attendance and all things worked out sang happy birthday with Jake’s exploits on earth noted.

Still not happy with this tilt in which, incredibly the Penguins went 37 mins sans a shot on goal. They are near great, perhaps great, but teams like the glory days Canadiens, Islanders and Oilers would have “toyed” with them, certainly minimum, in my not so humble opinion, were discernibly better.

Recalling John F. Kennedy

One hundred years ago today, John F. Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The Kennedy family has always called for Mr. Kennedy, the 35th United States President’s birthday and certainly life, be recalled with more “vigor,” (did not “Jack” say that word and so many others, so well.?!!) than his death, from a still, not certainly known assassin’s bullets.

All of us are born and eventually die. However, precious few live and die the way John F. Kennedy did.

On this birthday, I will try to recall the accomplishments and the man, I admire so.

Stanley Cup Final Begins Tomorrow Night

Jim Rutherford, the current Penguins general manager and current Nashville coach, Peter Laviolette won a Stanley Cup together, each in the same role with the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes.

Now they or more precisely their teams clash for the title, the best of seven Cup Final beginning tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.

There were many references to the game during the Pirates/Mets telecast on Fox last night.

Since the Pittsburgh Pirates lost the 1927 World Series to a great New York Yankees team, the city of Pittsburgh is (13-3) in championship round action. The Pens are (4-1).

Only once before has a team from Tennessee played for a major North American sports crown, in it, the Tennessee Titans lost to the St. Louis Rams in the ’99 season Supe.

NBA Title Round Notes, Comments And A Shaky Prediction

The inevitable NBA Finals (the NHL title round is the Stanley Cup Final, the corresponding NBA series is “the finals,” with the NHL usage being correct) battle between the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers and top ranked (for a third straight season) Golden State Warriors, has manifested for a third straight season, a first in NBA annals.

The teams went a combined (24-1) to reach the final (note the usage), with top ranked Golden State going (12-0).

This upcoming Cleve/GS final will be the fourth title round clash between the same team for three consecutive seasons, one in each major North American sports entity and no matter who wins, on all four occasions one team will have evoked “Meat Loaf’s” song and won two of three, which is much better than “not bad.” In fact, making three straight final rounds and certainly winning one of three, is also better than “not bad.”

The first such instance was in baseball from (1921-1923) as the New York Giants won the first two. I regret, as I do so many things regarding my father (talk to your parents and if possible have them record a narrative about their lives and those things meaningful to them and you!!) never asking if he had any recollections of the ” Frankie Frisch, Johnny Rawlings, High Pockets Kelly involved double play, that clinched the Giants World Series win over the Yankees in 1921. They won again, without losing a game in 1922.

The next year, the Yankees had their own home, Yankee Stadium and topped the Giants, as they also did in the next/last four World Series battles to date (’36,’37, ’51 and ’62).

The Yankees a stellar (27-13) in World Series play lost in their next World Series, (yes the great Grover “Pete”/Cleveland Alexander did fan Tony Lazzeri in the Series’ big spot, but “Poosh Em Up” (Lazzeri) was also great  in his playing career,) before winning in a mind blowing 15 of their next 16 W.S. appearances.

Speaking of Cleveland, the city, not Mr. Alexander’s middle name, they were involved the lone time the same teams met for the NFL crown in three straight seasons, the Detroit Lions winning in ’52 and ’53 before the Browns won in ’54.

As was the case in the other two league final round contests between the same teams for three straight seasons, the lone instance in NHL play manifested in one team (twice a Detroit team has won two straight title round entities against the same team, before losing in the third straight season clash) the Detroit Red Wings winning vs the Montreal Canadiens in the first two final round battles, (Tony Leswick a distant relative of 1986 #7 World Series winner, Len Dykstra, scored in overtime of game 7 in 1954 and the Wings again 7’d the Habs in ’55) before Montreal began the greatest run, as the greatest NHL team, with the first of 5 straight title wins (’56-60) by topping the Red Wings in the 1956 Stanley Cup Final.

After so many tangents and I hope some reasonably interesting info, (at least it is accurate, unlike a recent otherwise fine Sports Illustrated piece on Cleveland in 1954 and much of what that entails, in which it was disseminated that “Dusty” Rhodes #1 ’54 W.S. game winning HR was hit to left, when of course it was hit to right), I offer one more tidbit and a shaky prediction on the fourth such series.

Above, without identifying him, I referenced Grover Cleveland, a United States president.

Alas, as cited in the other three such situations, one team won the first two before losing the third. This Cleve/GS has and will be different as the teams (GS in ’15 and Cleve, aided immeasurably when Silver suspended Green in ’16) split the first two final round meetings.

Since Mr. Cleveland won the presidency in 1884, lost in 1888 but won it in 1892, only Golden State, technically can “pull,” or at least evoke, Mr. Grover Cleveland, (win, lose, win), the only man or woman for that matter, to win a presidential election, lose one and then win one.

I say 12 to 5 favorite, Golden State  will “pull a (Grover) Cleveland,” by winning in six games.

Grover Cleveland, pictured above.
