Some Game 1 ’69 World Series Notes

September 3, 2026

Game 1, which turned into the aberration game I suppose as eventually a great 100 wins Mets team 5’d an even greater 109 wins Orioles team, is in the top of the first with eventual W.S. MVP Donn Clendenon at bat, .340 hitter (Cleon) “Clee” Jones at first, with 2 out vs 23 game winner Mike Cuellar.

NBC broadcaster Jim Simpson, working with Mets announcer Ralph Kiner notes where left fielder, Don Buford is playing for “Clink.” (Clendenon).

He also cites that the great Mickey Mantle, who worked NBC TV pre game coverage with Simpson and another great, Sandy Koufax, called “Buf” (Buford) a coming American League star.

Botton one, no score and just before 25 game winner Tom Seaver’s second pitch to leadoff batter, Buford–Ralph “King Kong” Kiner notes Don’s progress since his minor league San Diego days where he/Kiner was general manager.

Buford hits Seaver’s second pitch for a home run, the O’s never relinquish the lead and win the opening game.

A tremendous pitcher, crafty Mike Cuellar is pictured above.
