H’s (Not aces), Haddix and Hill Great Pitched Losses

A few notes on the juxtaposition between the great pitched losses by a pair of “H’s” (neither aces) Harvey Haddix in 1959 and Rich Hill last night.

Pirates’ pitcher, Haddix pitched an incredible 12 perfect innings, a feat not likely to ever be equaled–pitchers today leave with leads in the 6th inning—but lost to the then Milwaukee Braves, at “Milw,” in the 13th inning.

(89-36) L.A.’s Hill had a perfect game for 8 innings and a no hitter through 9, but lost at Pittsburgh, vs the Pirates, in the bottom of the 10th inning.

In the game over 58 years ago, Haddix’s perfect game ended when Felix Mantilla reached on Pirates’ third sacker, Don Hoak’s error to start B13.

Last night an error by the L.A. third sacker, Logan Forsythe, ended Hill’s bid for a perfect game in the bottom of the 8th.

I will probably have more notes and comments on the game, juxtaposition and the reporting on it, elsewhere in the next few days.

A year after the Haddix masterpiece loss, the Pirates won it all. The Dodgers are odds on to “pennant” and only slight underdogs to win it all this season.

They easily are considered the team with the best chance of winning. We shall see what transpires.

The Saints Will March In The Second Pooh/Romo Game But Why Must We Endure IT?!

I will go a bit out on the proverbial limb, picking the New Orleans Saints to win the NFC South in the 2017 season.

Another prediction is that they will play very well in their second game vs the defending Super Bowl champion, New England Patriots.

By the way, I certainly did not like Phil Simms as an analyst nor all that much as a quarterback, but who the expletive is Tony Romo?!–Pooh aka Jim Nantz’s new analyst.

You need only look around to know the lunatics are running the asylum, Tony Romo as a god, by the way one who never even MADE a title game in his “illustrious” career, the latest example.

“Sav” is dead, a kid died tragically and is buried in his Tony Romo uniform–what hath we wrought?!

Anthem Coincidence, look it up!

I go to my first game in at least two years and someone named Chris Jackson sings the United States national anthem before the game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets this night.

Look up Chris Jackson basketball and see the coincidence.

Jackson the singer, I think of Michael and Joe, others as well did a nice job.

Remember look it up.

“Chain” Was Also Thrown Out

“Later” in the week, the first word a clue, perhaps comments on Deborah Harry and Blondie still so great and another great deeming to appear with one who does not rate, alas it is TOO LATE.

Thus this brilliance, these facts, this information from Merriam Webster–they deserve the since 1825 “plug.”

Is that context of plug in their dictionary? My mother, unlike his mother who never would have defended the “other guy,” giving him more confidence/arrogance but overall more chance for success despite character, did say he “worked for it,” also would have said “look it up.”

Definition of led
past tense and past participle of lead
Explore Merriam-Webster

lead and led
There is some persistent confusion about lead and led. Or, we should say, there is confusion about the leads and led. Lead is both a noun and a verb, as most people know. There are several unrelated nouns spelled lead: one most commonly refers to a metal (as in, “The paint was made with lead”), and the other most commonly refers to a position of advantage (as in, “Our team was in the lead”). The verb lead is pronounced /LEED/, with a long e; the noun that refers to a position or advantage is also pronounced /LEED/, with a long e; the noun that refers to the metal, however, is pronounced /LED/, with a short e. To this moderately convoluted situation, add the past tense and past participle of the verb lead, which is led and pronounced like the metal noun lead with a short e. The homophonic confusion leads to homographic confusion, and you will therefore occasionally see lead in constructions where led is called for (as in, “She lead the ducklings to safety” instead of “She led the ducklings to safety”). The correct past and past participle of lead is spelled led. If you aren’t sure whether to use led or lead as the verb in your sentence, try reading it aloud to yourself. If the verb is pronounced /LED/, use led.

Watching “Suspicion” on TCM

Two cameos from Mr. Hitchcock in his classic 1942 film, “Suspicion.”

The second, was mailing a letter in the distance.

He made cameos in most of his films that were shown on a fairly wide scale basis.

Joan Fontaine won the Best Leading Actress Academy Award for her role in “Suspicion.”

A good way to spend a hot day, watching a great film on TCM.

Mr. Cotten starred in Hitch’s (who am I to call Mr. Hitchcock, “Hitch?”) favorite film that he directed any way. Do you know the film’s title?  Let “us” know, thank you.

“Bells” Is Gone: Perhaps A gambling angel in heaven

Another warning, another to whom I did not say good bye—Steve “Bells” Savarese is gone, at most 64 years on this earth, where yes, he gambled, but oh did he give, even just being “Bells.”

I stand by my views, from the truly important that Trump is a horror and his ascent to the presidency foreshadows all our doom, and to the far less important, yet fervent belief that John Franco is not only not worthy of making the Hall of Fame, but that he was largely an “arsonist,” not a fireman, in big spots as a relief pitcher.

Yet as I write either, I know that while I am almost always the one who gives in/makes the first call toward patching things, that I have my own pigheaded views, right, wrong or indifferent and that sways my thinking and lessens my compassion.

I stood at Steve’s building, receiving good, but considering, not very important news, that Don Drysdale had pitched another shutout, the night Robert F. Kennedy was slain. (Senator Kennedy had congratulated “Big D” just before).

We played “Be A Manager” and he famously advised after consuming much food at an outside event, that “he could really go for some beef cutlets.”

Years passed and I caught “the bug,” he talked of the Brinks truck and how I gulped candy “charms” before deciding to go to the track with him, skipping college classes, the day of #5 ’75 W.S. having been “hurt” by the Red Sox series squaring win the night before, in that classic World Series vs eventual winner Cincinnati and Pete (maybe that is why Giamatti was so harsh!).

More years passed, I saw him less, then more when I shamelessly went to the Rooneys “house of horror/take advantage of other’s misery and sickness,” Yonkers Raceway, then less and received Steve’s praise for avoiding it.

Parents died, another, call him “The Bellman” did not call “Bells” when the latter’s beloved mother died, but receiving his # from me, benefited from casino packages through Bells.

That and the fact the Bellman’s arrogant, Trump voting, Franco should be in the Hall, but highly successful son led to my not calling “Bells,” until days ago.

The call came this morning and I asked his sister if he knew I called, he did not, hopefully a lesson to all.

See if we do not stop the hate, whether the absurdity/evil of another’s skin color/ethnicity, or baseball opinions, or perceived, even real slights and create a healthy conversation, “Bells” or “Bellman”—I know the reality and for whom the “bell tolls.”

Sadly, in so many ways, it already has.

Yes I criticized Trump, Giamati, The Rooneys, Yonkers Raceway and certainly “The Bellman” and son.  Perhaps I did not spell check, use tags, or make clear my failures.

After seeing an ancient Phillies fan, then two really young ones adorning team shirts, I was about to mention the older to the younger one’s parents when he walked in.

Maybe Bells’ angel wings, maybe God had the Angels only to be Machado’d (nobody Machados God, but people including me ?), maybe bet the nowhere Phils vs the Bellman’s “nowhere but 3 titles since cavorting with Bells,” after not calling him when the latter’s mother died. I will not.

Perhaps Steve was telling me what I already knew he felt, that I am so kind as he was. Go easy my friend, and bet a “yo” while on your way!

Wash Will Be In The Baseball “Quarters”

Another year, another division crown, albeit a one eighth, for Washington (Nationals) and their fine regular season manager Dusty Baker.

The Nationals will be the N.L. two seed and face the N.L. Central winners in the baseball tournament quarterfinals.

In the last three even year seasons, Wash made the “quarters” only to lose, in tough decisive 5th games in ’12 and ’16, the former vs the Cardinals truly excruciating.

The team in “Damn Yankees,” getting Ray Walston’s “help” was from Washington D.C.

Door open?

Today at venerable Wrigley Field, the wind blew out, the total was 12 or higher.

Cincy led (9-0), but the Cubs tied it. The world champion Cubs, I might add.

However Cincy regained the “wood”, never lost it and won (13-10).

Keep leaving the NL Central door open, Cubs.

It is too bad Dusty (Baker) and “Wash” will be favored vs the Cubs, if the Cubs make it.

See I do not take favorites, but very likely the Nationals will “wash” away the Cubs if they meet in a baseball quarterfinal, itself an entity that is insane (money of course) as it lessens the importance of the long baseball regular season.

I do not like the Cubs and their Trump backing owner. However,  I never win (did not even “protect” by betting on Trump and now look) so I would root for the Cubs. Let’s get to it already.

The Dodgers are no lock either, despite their truly great play.

40 Years Of Desert, Sans Elvis Presley

Nobody was Elvis, but I was quite a tall, handsome, albeit incredibly inexperienced man when the miss-miss-sad, 1977 got worse with news, “The King,” Elvis Presley was dead, 40 years ago today. Long live his talent and charm, despite as we all have, (his) demons.

I was in my room, having figuratively not strayed, but do know a thing or two since, when WXLO’s (99X) Bob Slade reported Elvis Aaron Presley, a fellow only child with a loving, but often stifling mother, had died.

The reaction, the charisma, Charles Kuralt’s CBS report (Beano Cook once told Mr. Kuralt, a true talent and gentleman, “there is something wrong with this country if Brent Musburger is making more money than you.” Kuralt, modest but honest agreed. Imagine now with so many worse than “Horse,” now “officially’ in with gambling, making even more money.)

All that negative can return us to Elvis Aaron Presley, one with demons, but an almost Biblical creation of talent, looks, charisma and the commercially viable pigment to “kernel” moolah.

Yet if you watch him or have watched him sing a ballad or rock out ‘dangerously” shaking, one can be reminded of what could have been and in Mr. Presley’s case did manifest.

Wilt Chamberlain, a record holder of epic proportions himself, in his first book a great one “Just like any 7 foot millionaire” in not the whole title, talked of those saying Elvis was washed up, standing on line to see him in Las Vegas.

Click below to see Elvis Presley PERFORM. In this one “Suspicious Minds” recorded in L.V. (Horse’s new and always home), maybe Mr. Brahms and certainly not Little Richard are raving, but what a show, what a great performer!!
