American League Update

The most certain baseball playoffs qualifier at the moment is Cleveland (Indians).

The team has a 13 game lead and almost certainly will win a third straight “one eighth” division title and their tenth such first place finish, in this the 24th possibility.

In the other two A.L. divisions, Houston with a one and a half game lead, hosts second place Oakland tonight in the first of a three game series.

With a “wild card safety net in place for both teams, 40 years later, the Yankees have again gained significant ground on the Boston Red Sox, in one weekend.

Boston with baseball’s best record lead the Yankees, with baseball’s second best mark, by 6 games, 5 in the loss column.

What’s My Line With Aretha Franklin As The Mystery Guest

Today another great episode of What’s My Line.

This episode, from the new “What’s My Line” hosted by Larry Blyden aired on September 9, 1974 and featured a long segment with the great and recently departed, Aretha Franklin as the mystery guest. Need I say more!

I will, only to say, Soupy Sales, Dana Valery, Jerry Orbach and Arlene Francis comprised the panel.

WNBA Update

The best of five WNBA semi-final series open tomorrow.

Seattle (Storm) the top ranked team will meet the Phoenix Mercury in one series while second ranked Atlanta (Dream) face the Washington Mystics in the other series.

Seattle and Atlanta have the home advantage as games 1 and 2 and a potential decisive 5th are scheduled in their home arena.

I Seriously Doubt The Philadelphia Eagles Will Repeat As NFL Champions

I will not wait until their opening night Super Bowl win celebration ceremony, to state the heavily favored notion, that the Philadelphia Eagles will not repeat as NFL champions.

This is in no way is a negative regarding them, as last year’s title achievement was great and they still figure to be good this season.

Last season, I said “No” for New England and will show that post. Only the Eagles stopped them, I hope I am wrong, but likely not, I say there will be no repeat crown for the Eagles.

Click below to view my post regarding New England, I was correct but barely.

Baltimore Colts Remembered

Below, view what it took for the city of Baltimore to get an NFL franchise.

The fans as exhibited in the fine film, “Diner” ( in order to marry, a perspective wife had to pass a quiz on the Colts) truly loved the Colts.

Oh the roars eminating from that/their Memorial Stadium!

Of course the Colts are now in Indianapolis and Baltimore has the once Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens.

WNBA Playoffs Begin

Last night, the WNBA playoffs began, sixteen days earlier than last season, with two first round, single elimination games.

The Los Angeles Sparks defeated the defending champion Minnesota Lynx while Diana Taurasi is now (12-0) in series “winner take all” tilts, as the Phoenix Mercury eliminated the Dallas Wings.

Both victorious teams played at home, but now face a single elimination road game tomorrow night, the Sparks at Washington (Mystics) and the Mercury in Connecticut, to face the Sun.

“Night Ranger’s” “Sister Christian” Plays and Plays

On Sunday past, within minutes at approximately 7:20 P.M. Eastern time, the fine song “Sister Christian” recorded by “Night Ranger” thirty four years ago, played first on WCBS FM (101.1) and then Q 104.3 (WAXQ) in New York.

First of all, these are not the days of two A.M. stations (WABC and WNBC) playing largely current hits.

Next, I rarely listen and switch, as there are other options and only do so while in a car.

Additionally, this was a 34 year old song!

Anyway, click below to view a video of “Night Ranger’s” “Sister Christian.”

American League West Update

The surprising Oakland Athletics won the first two games of home series vs the other A.L. West contenders, the world champion Astros and Seattle Mariners, before losing the finales in each case.

World champion Houston begins the week a game ahead of Oakland, with Seattle four and a half games behind.

New York (Yankees) with baseball’s second best record (both the Red Sox and Yankees have gone (10-3) since Boston built its lead to nine and a half games with a four game home sweep, vs the Yankees two weeks back) will almost certainly be one wild card entrant, thus most likely, one of the three A.L. West teams will fail to qualify for the baseball playoffs.

What’s My Line July 9, 1961

Today another fine episode from the television show, “What’s My Line.”

This one aired on July 9, 1961, with Bill Cullen, a great game show host in his own right, appearing as the mystery guest.

Husband and wife Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows joined regular panelists Dorothy Kilgallen and Bennett Cerf.

This show marked a return of sorts for Mr. Allen, who had been a regular panelist on What’s My Line. John Daly is the show’s host.

Enjoy.

Aretha Gone, Not Her Many Great Contributions

A true great and magnificent talent and entertainer, Aretha Franklin died on August 16th at the age of 76.

Her magnificent voice which resonated on such smash hits as “Respect” and “Natural Woman” was one for the ages.

Ms. Franklin’s songs inspired during the Civil Rights Movement and resonate this day and always.

I highly recommend the work “Aretha Live at The Fillmore West” (in San Francisco), as an example of music that is transcendental.

Her work and voice lives on, bye Aretha!
