Today, another great episode of the iconic television show, “What’s My Line?”

Debbie Reynolds makes another appearance as the mystery guest, (“The Unsinkable Molly Brown will soon open) in this March 1, 1964 episode.

The panelists are Dorothy Kilgallen, Woody Allen (that rhymes) plus Arlene Francis and Martin Gabel (they are married to each other).

John Charles Daly is the host.

Some Baseball Post-Season Notes

Tomorrow night, the roughly two to one favored Houston Astros (game 1 and series), will host the Washington Nationals, as the 2019 World Series commences.

Some notes follow that you likely will not find elsewhere.

When the SF Giants won the 2014 World Series in 7 games at Kansas City vs the Royals (K.C. won it all the next season, but as a small market team had to give up its fine nucleus of players), they became the first team in 8 tries to win the subsequent World Series after winning its LCS “at the plate,” when not facing a team that also won its LCS “at the plate.” (In ’76 both the Reds who swept the subsequent World Series, and Yankees won their LCS while batting.)

The Astros are seeking to be just the second to do so. (The ’03 Yankees, ’06 Tigers of the A.L. and ’92 and ’99 Braves, ’72 Reds, ’78 Dodgers and ’02 Giants of the N.L. all lost their subsequent World Series, after winning its LCS “at the plate.”)

One more: In game 3 of the 1964 World Series, “the great Mickey Mantle” (Jack Nicholson’s “Cuckoo’s Nest’s” character’s words regarding #7), homered to end game 3 of a (1-1) World Series. However, the St. Louis Cardinals came back to win that series in 7 games.

Since that point, 7’s are operative as teams winning game 3, of a (1-1) post-season series in New York (Yankees or Mets) are (14-1) in that series. (7 wins each in series involving the Yankees and Mets).

The Astros made it (7-0) in series involving the Yankees (the ’19 Astros and ’10 Texas Rangers doing so in ALCS while the ’05 Angels and ’18 eventual champion Red Sox did so in “div” series. Meanwhile the Yankees won the ’76 and ’78 ALCS, the latter en route to the title and an ’00 “div” series, also “en route” in the aforementioned situation).

Teams are (7-1) in said series, throughout Mets post-season history after winning at New York in game 3 of a (1-1) series. The lone exception being the Dodgers winning the series and in fact, eventually their last title in ’88, despite losing game 3 of a (1-1) NLCS at New Yok vs the Mets.

The Mets won the ’69 World Series, ’73 and ’86 NLCS (the latter en route to their last title) and “div” series in ’99, ’00 and ’15 in that situation. Meanwhile the Oakland A’s won the ’73 World Series after winning such a game 3.

The Astros Win The American League Pennant

The Houston Astros rode Jose Altuve’s 2 out, 2 run home run, B9 to a (6-4) win over the Yankees in game 6, yielding a third pennant for the team.

Houston now has 2 A.L. pennants, both clinched in Saturday night ALCS home wins vs the Yankees, who have 40 pennants, but have now lost 4 straight ALCS, dropping their still very good record in such play to (11-6).

As was the case in the 2005 NLCS vs the Cardinals, the Astros failed to clinch the pennant despite a lead with a chance to do so, in the top of the 9th inning.

Then Albert Pujols capped a 2 out, 3 run rally and the Cards won game 5, only to lose #6 and the series.

Last night, D.J. LeMahieu hit a one out, game tying 2RHR, just over a leaping George Springer’s glove.

However, after Springer walked with 2 outs, B9, Altuve laced a (2-1) pitch from Aroldis Chapman, for a 2 run, pennant winning home run.

Houston will be a nice favorite vs the upstart, wild card Washington Nationals in the 2019 World Series, which begins on Tuesday night in Houston.

One would think the first two games will feature pitching battles between stars. Houston has Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander while Washington will counter with Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg.

ALCS And FOX “Vs” TBS Notes

Tonight, the home team, Houston Astros with a (3-2) series lead bid for their third pennant in game 6 on Fox Sports 1, vs the New York Yankees, the latter forcing a 6th game last night, in quest of their 41st pennant.

Once again Fox got a longer LCS than TBS, which telecast the Nationals sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS.

In 13 seasons (’07-2019) of both Fox and TBS each telecasting one LCS, Fox gets its 80th game tonight (maybe an 81st tomorrow night) an average of over 6 per season.

Meanwhile TBS has averaged a 5 game series, 65 games in those 13 seasons. They had but one 7 game series, that the ’08 ALCS and this was the 5th time they had a 4 game sweep. Only in ’08 did TBS get more LCS games than Fox.

Great Day At Banana Republic Ridge Hill Yonkers, New York

There are times when exemplary courtesy, service and yes, a good deal manifest.

There was such a case for me when Mindy and Taylor, part of “The Dream Team,” at the Banana Republic store in the Ridge Hill complex in Yonkers, New York, helped me with a purchase days back.

Their warmth, knowledge and willingness to listen made it a nice buying experience for me. Thank you again.

Ty Cobb On “I’ve got a Secret”

Today another iconic show, “I’ve got a Secret” and a segment of that show with the legendary, baseball great Ty Cobb, that aired in September 1955.

Gary Moore is the show’s host while the panelists on this show were Henry Morgan, Bill Cullen, Kitty Carlisle and Jayne Meadows.

Cobb is most personable, in sharp contrast to his image.

I have included my review of Ty’s grandson’s Herschel’s book, “Heart of a Tiger,” depicting a loving grandfather.

Enjoy the segment.

Nationals’ National (League Pennant)

The Washington Nationals nee Montreal Expos franchise captured their first pennant, in this their 50th completed season (’69-2019, with no post-season in ’94, when it should be noted the then Montreal Expos had baseball’s best record, when the season was canceled), completing a four game NLCS sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals last night.

It is the third time the Cardinals have been swept in a best of 7 series, the first vs the great Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig Yankees in 1928 and the more recent one, in the ’04 World Series, vs the Boston Red Sox.

The 2004 World Series victory for the Red Sox ended an 86 year title drought, while last night’s Washington Nationals pennant means World Series games will be played in the United States capital for the first time in 86 years.

Howie Kendrick, pictured above, was named NLCS MVP.

In the division series vs L.A. in the decisive 5th game,  Kendrick’s top of the tenth inning, grand slam home run, essentially lifted the Nationals into the NLCS.

Twenty Years Since Wilt Went Away

Twenty years ago, the great and legendary, Wilt Chamberlain passed away.

Almost each March 2nd, I cite Wilt’s 100 point game on that date in 1962. Likely more amazing, he averaged over 50 points per game in that (1961-1962) NBA regular season.

While his teams pretty clearly should have won more titles, Wilt played on the two best record NBA teams (the (1966-1967) Philadelphia 76ers and (1971-1972) Los Angeles Lakers), at the time, each of whom won titles.

He was a “man of the world,” with many interests who enjoyed life and its pleasures.

In these “pendulum swinging” times, Wilt’s quote citing “our Victorian past and hypocritical present,” regarding mores, especially those regarding sexual activity, came to mind today.

At that point, I realized it has been 20 years since, perhaps, God called Wilt for his volleyball team.

Click below for a nice Volkswagen ad with Wilt and his 76ers’ teammate/friend and superb player, Bill(y) Cunningham.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward On What’s My Line

Today, another great episode of the iconic television show, “What’s My Line?”

The mystery guests are husband and wife actors, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. It is early in each actor’s brilliant career.

Arlene Francis, Bennett Cerf, Dorothy Kilgallen and Art Linkletter are the panelists.

John Charles Daly is the show’s host.

Enjoy!

LCS Update And Notes

The Washington Nationals, playing in their first LCS or any best of seven series, have a (2-0) series lead for just the second time in 8 post-season series, after winning the first two games in St. Louis.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees handed the Houston Astros their 5th consecutive LCS loss, winning the ALCS opener in Houston.

It is the first time in 7 Astros’ LCS (4 in the National League), that they failed to win either the series opener or the first tilt in Houston.

Washington D.C.’s only baseball title (the Senators), was 95 years ago (1924), the year after the Yankees won the first of their 27 such titles.
