Possible Historic World Series Redux

September 22, 2013

As the baseball regular season winds down, it is nice to reflect on some possible, interesting, what would be historic, rematches in the 2013 post season.

Two, involve the Pittsburgh Pirates, who almost certainly will be in the tournament, likely playing in the one game playoff between the two wild card teams.

In the first World Series played 110 years ago the Pirates franchise met the Red Sox franchise. The Red Sox then known as the Boston Pilgrims, prevailed 5 games to 3 in a best of nine contest.

Another involving the Pirates over 100 years ago resulted in a Pittsburgh victory.

That World Series was in 1909. In the first decisive 7th game of a World Series, Pittsburgh defeated the Detroit Tigers.

The 1909 World Series matched Pittsburgh’s Honus Wagner and the Tigers’ Ty Cobb.

With both Boston and Detroit in the American League side of the “draw,” it is possible there will be a redux of a World Series played at least 100 years ago.

There has not been such a “repeat of history”  in the 10 possible years for such an occurrence, (2003-2012).
