A (23-12) score (it was the Chargers “under-ing” the Niners as TD “dogs”–I know it is exhibition, but rather it– than 12 teams in the tournament baseball. Will get to baseball soon enough), evokes the 1965 NFL Title Game win by Green Bay (Packers), at home, vs the Cleveland Browns, in the great Jim Brown’s last game that really mattered. (He played in the subsequent Pro Bowl).
20/Twenty Three college “pig” begins today with pro commencing essentially in two weeks.
It is a season after the death of Jim Brown and at a time some sit eating chicken and rice, while so many gamble on NFL and college games.
In that ’65 title tilt, Paul Hornung, a true great, who as Jim did once, scored 5 touchdowns in a game (Gale Sayers in the Wrigley Field mud scored 6, on the same day late in the ’65 “reg”—you see I once loved this) sloshed through the muck and scored a key touchdown, called by the great broadcaster, Ted Moore.
Mr. Moore said it evoked “the days of yore.”
As IT starts today, those “days of yore” still resonate, but not enough for me to “mainline,” even watch this stuff.
I have said it before, if I can do it, so can you.
P.S. Some of IT, will cost you extra $$$–the latter what the NFL, Bronxville and its resident the NFL czar, Goodell are all about.

Above the great broadcaster, Ted Moore is pictured. The coat similar to one Coach Lombardi wore, does evoke, as Moore called it, “the days of yore.”
The title is a reference to one being asked about recent events, replying “they were recent.”
That is about all I can say regarding those in sports, as Women’s World Cup soccer and the “Wash” team with the ubiquitous Earvin “Magic” Johnson now a part owner, ending the Ravens’ “exhibition” win skein, as nowhere near “big,” however, “bigger” than day to day, “12 teams in the tournament,” baseball.
Spain won that World Cup, after “Balti” no covered the Eagles, “Wash” bet from plus 3 to plus 1, won by 1 to end the Ravens’ win skein.
I like the Ravens, not so their coach John Harbaugh.
Right back at you in the “no respect” matter, as those exhibition wins of your Ravens meant little, if anything.
We had lost Bob BAUN and now without “Hall” status, another disgrace cast upon us by the truly unaware voters for such things, Maxie BAUGHan, a Pro Bowl player in 9 of his first 10 seasons, has died at age 83.
Without exhibition game prowess, the Ravens with a tremendous linebacker Ray Lewis, won crowns in 2000 and a dozen years later.
Lewis credits Maxie Baughan for believing in him.
Go easy Maxie, Robert Robertson (Oh “The Band” and before that playing at Jack Ruby’s Fort Worth, TExas club) and ” The Eagles” (Maxie and Randy each with Eagles greatness) Randy Meisner, and in honor of Mr. Meisner, I will try as we must all, to take this “to the limit,” despite these times and their inherent lowered standards and sensibilities.
Think about this one, today during (of course) a repeat episode of the television show, The Waltons, a “come on” ad for a legal sports betting entity appeared.
I need not comment any further!!
Did you see it Stone?
Alas, he did call “The Waltons” a quality program and cited Ralph Waite of White Plains and “The Waltons” cast.
He did see the ad/come on, a type that permeates and over steps its boundaries at an exponential rate.
Stone said “these kids ruin their lives, what do you care?!!
Maybe he is right.
Yet I do care and the intrusive ads, now as far, in almost comical fashion, into “The Waltons” do disturb me.
On we must go, somehow.

Ralph Waite, pictured above.
Some comments and perspective follows, recalling Bob Baun, who died days back at the age of 84.
Baun scored the overtime game winning goal for the eventual 1964 NHL champion, Toronto Maple Leafs in game 6 of the final, doing so after breaking his ankle.
Toronto then clinched the title with a (4-0) home win vs Detroit (Red Wings) in game 7.
It was the third straight title for Toronto and the subsequent ’67 title made it 4 in 6 seasons.
Baun as part of a great defensive unit, was a member of all four of those title teams. The Leafs have not even reached an NHL final since that point.
Click below to view Baun’s overtime goal in that #6/’64 NHL final as called by Bill Hewitt, Foster’s son and a qualified, skilled broadcaster, unlike most, whose fathers paved their way.
Two nights back, the New York Liberty eased vs the top ranked Las Vegas Aces for a second straight time, (The Aces did so in the team’s first clash) to win an “in season” tournament.
This type of event which the far worse NBA under mercenary, pro gambling Silver will implement, meant nothing, but the women players getting a little more dough, which in their case, not for the too rich, NBA ilk, is bearable.
Las Vegas (-6) tonight (no prediction tonight) still has a 3 game loss column lead, as the Tuesday game did not count in the standings.
Sorry for not knowing that.
Hence, even if the Liberty win again tonight, Las Vegas is still likely to be the 1 seed.
However, there was a big “move” on the Liberty’s perceived chance to finally win a crown (none in their first 26 seasons and in basketball, men or women, getting “loaded up” as the Liberty were/are is akin to certain can’t miss improvement, unlike the case in baseball where the Mets, Padres, Yankees and Angels have all failed or seemingly so) as from plus 275 they are now only plus 180 in some circles.

Surely I give the WNBA more “coverage” than perhaps needed, but in my Houston and repeat titles, not long ago, I could have cited the Houston Comets won the first 4 WNBA titles. Two pictures in tribute to the now defunct franchise above.
Tonight, in a third “reg” clash and second in “Sin City”/Las Vegas (remember when sports leagues wanted no part of “Vegas” or gambling?!!) the defending WNBA champion, (27-3) Las Vegas Aces are 7 point favorites, vs the (24-6) New York Liberty.
The expanded WNBA season is now 40 games, ending on September 10th, going “against” the first Sunday of pro pig.
One would think if the Aces get at least a split in the next 2 games, vs the Liberty (the two top teams clash again in L.V. on Thursday night. The Connecticut Sun were bidding for the “2” seed, but losses to teams other than the Aces or Liberty, quelled that bid, certainly for now), they will be the “1” seed and have home advantage, in the very likely case that they meet the Liberty in the WNBA final round.
Las Vegas and the New York Liberty have split their 2 clashes thus far, each winning at home with the Liberty going off “plus 5” and ripping the Aces in their win.
Now “7,” a familiar, if not good “Vegas” number, but these teams are pretty close, the value was in plus 5 at home, vs plus 7 on the road.
Tonight: Aces by 10. Liberty stay in it with a split, somehow in these two.
Aces to get the top mark and I guess it is these two in the final, certainly what ESPN/ABC which just “housed” Jones to third or fourth and “seconded” Ryan Ruocco, (another blow but that how it go!!) wants.

Last night, the L.A. Dodgers honored the excellent pitcher, Fernando Valenzuela, retiring his number 34.
Master of “Moanies” (yes, ceremonies, today a Kiddish for Norman Sheff, who is still quite a wit and 93) as Steiner, does not “Charlie” good L.A. fortune, though “Superstar” usurping the microphone after #7/2003 ALCS was wrong.
The once my love, Dodgers, as surely Doug Sheff recalls, will likely be the N.L. “2” seed in what amounts to the 29th baseball tournament, a 12 team “joke” for a second straight year.
Last season Atlanta (Braves), the likely 2023 “1” and the “2” last season and the Dodgers (reverse that) were each 4’d out on the same day, in the “quarters.”
While that is unlikely to transpire again this season, the tournament remains a great and in my strong opinion, bad/fertile “ground” for possible upsets, that continue to diminish the “true test” 162 game regular season.

Fernando Valenzuela, pictured above.
Usually, I neither cite the year nor Wikipedia, however, in this case, both, as the year in the above photo via Wikipedia, is from 1981, the year in an extra tier of ‘offs, somewhat justified by a long period of no baseball, Fernando, more than anyone, led the Dodgers to their first crown in 16 years.
Surely tainted by the shorter season, as is their most recent 2020 title, it still involved me as a fan and I have a warm spot in my memories for Fernando Valenzuela.
Last year I titled the post as such below after the Ravens won their 23rd consecutive exhibition game.
“I pondered, weak and weary,” why do the Ravens win /try so hard to win exhibition games
Last year, the Baltimore Ravens (-5) won (17-15) vs Wash to extend their exhibition game win skein to 23, 4 more than the previous record set by Green Bay (Packers) from )1959-1962). Why win these games and why does Ravens’ coach John Harbaugh “cliche it” in regard to the positive in winning such tilts.
Tomorrow night the Ravens (-4 half) face the second straight NFLteam that was “held back” from a Supe crown or at least a reasonable chance at one, namely the Philly Eagles.
I think the Ravens, who unlike the Packers during their long exhibition season win skein had great success, winning 2 crowns and making 3 title games, have not made a title game/semi during their streak, are a viable Supe contender this season.
A suggestion, actually a strong one: LOSE your exhibition opener and certainly lose one of the 3 exhibition tilts.

The sexy Hoops Cabaret Girls invite you to watch UFC 292 featuring champion Aljamain Sterling vs Sean O’Malley, with them on Saturday, August 19th.
Fresh from a major victory over Henry Cejudo, Aljamain Sterling puts his UFC bantamweight title on the line against “Sugar” Sean O’Malley in a quest to not just keep his crown but cement his place as the best bantamweight to ever wear UFC gold.
In the co-main event of UFC 292, which takes place at TD Garden in Boston, Chinese star Zhang Weili defends her UFC strawweight championship against Brazilian battler Amanda Lemos.

The fan-favorite Hoops Cabaret is a great place to watch sporting events, with multiple giant screens, Hi-Def TVs, and its futuristic Mega-Tron Video Wall. Every seat has a clear view of the action.
Hoops Cabaret combines the fun of a sports bar with the excitement of a gentlemen’s club. “The UFC is very exciting,” said Hoops girl Brittany. “And so is a lap dance from a Hoops girl!”

Two cities/areas combined to house all four major North American sports league final round losing teams.
First both the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles lost the baseball and football final respectively.
Next, though each had a fine underdog run, both the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers lost in 5 games, getting eliminated on back to back nights, first the Heat and then the Panthers.
The Heat covered in defeat, but the next night Florida was routed.
The baseball teams from those cities/areas, the Phillies and Florida Marlins are among the many teams battling for the far too many (3) wild card berths in the National League.
Neither team will win the N.L. East as that barring something totally unforeseen, will go to the Atlanta Braves for a sixth straight season.

Gil Garrido, pictured above played on the 1969 N.L. West winning Atlanta Braves.
Atlanta won 5 “legit” one quarter N.L. West crowns while this will be their EIGHTeenth/one EIGHTH N.L. East first place finish.
