The Carolina Hurricanes Also (16-3) (Podres said “Perry” Hopped the fence that year, (’63)– to save game 2 for him) Win Their First Title In 20 Years

June 15, 2026

Last night the Carolina Hurricanes/nee Hartford even New England Whalers, the latter in the W.H.A. defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights (3-0) to “6” them and win their first title since 2006 and second in franchise history.

Carolina goaltender Brandon Bussi, inserted into #3/final with L.V. ahead (4-0) in an eventual (5-4) 2 O.T. win for them, proceeded to start and win the next 3 games, capping things with a 22 save #6/Cup clinching shutout win.

Jordan Staal, who scored in the first 5 games of the final series, did not score in #6, but was justifiably named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, at 37 the oldest to achieve the honor. His 70% win record on faceoffs backs his case.

Jordan Hall “opened” while Jackson Blake and Nikolaj Ehlers had the “Caro” (16-3 in the ‘offs. Both they and the N.Y. Knicks, the other title team in the pro “winter” sports went had that record, surely the best ever combined mark, at least in the need 16 wins time frame. Also the last time the Knicks won the NBA crown before 2 days back in ’73, the ‘Canes/Whalers franchise won the first of the seven WHA titles, winning vs Bobby Hull and the Winnipeg Jets), goals, the latter the empty net totally clinching tally in the last minute.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour became the first person to both captain (’06) and coach the great trophy’s recipient since the legendary Hector “Toe” Blake did so 70 years ago for Montreal (Canadiens).

Carolina in 18 final round games is (9-9), (5-4) at home, (4-5) road winning once each in 6 and 7 and losing in 5 to the Scotty Bowman (he is the man who passed his mentor Blake with his 9th coached title, doing so vs Carolina in 2002) coached Red Wings.

All 3 L.V. final series (they have made the final a so impressive three times in their nine seasons, going (1-2) in series, (6-9) in games, only (2-5) road and (4-4) home) ended at Vegas in game five.

That is Brandon Bussi, pictured below. Similar names Mike Bossy and Bussi for this series, evoked memories of Mike Bossy’s utter greatness throughout his career.

In a relief to starting role, rhyming Don Mossi (think ’54 then Cleveland Indians “reg”) comes to mind.
