The Golden Knights And Knicks “Open” With Comeback, Road Wins
On consecutive nights on ABC, which in a clear first, is TV’ing all games of both the NBA and NHL final rounds, first the Las Vegas Golden Knights and then the New York Knicks scored road, comeback wins in their loop’s title round opener.
Neither home, significantly better “reg,” team, the Carolina Hurricanes (2-0, now obviously (2-1) or the S.A. (anyone have a recording of him ripping the Knicks, a team he now “kvells” regarding) Spurs (6-0) now (6-1), had lost a final round opening game.
That changed despite Carolina “jumping” (2-0) and the Spurs being up 14 points in the third quarter, neither an overwhelming (though the former was in the first of 56? NHL final round opening games, in which a road team, trailing by multiple goals prevailed in said game) lead, however, surely a significant one.
Tomas Hertl, who scored the game’s ninth and final goal, breaking a tie (hope you can ascertain the score), with less than 4 minutes left and the incredible Jalen Brunson who hit for 13 of his 30 points in the 4th quarter, including a corner 3 point shot that put the Knicks (4-5 in final openers) ahead to stay, as they won such a tilt for the first time since 1972 when Bill Bradley, Jerry Lucas and Co. shot “lights out” at the L.A. Forum vs a (69-13, 33 straight wins and note eventual champion Lakers team.
Thrice in eight previous final rounds, the Knicks or their opponent (the next year/’73 Lakers and the ’53 Knicks vs another great Lakers team, that one located in Minneapolis and led by George Mikan and Jim Pollard, the latter the only guy the infamous but so good player, Jack Molinas could not play), not only lost the series but did so losing games (2-5).
Back to Hertl and Las Vegas (still unbeaten (3-0) in final rd. openers, having split the previous 2 such series), he scored the “go ahead to stay” goal when L.V. battled back from a (3-0) deficit at home in #3/semis to take a commanding (3-0) series lead vs the top ranked Colorado Avalanche, the latter’s “reg” points exceeding those of L.V. by 35.
