Next week’s “1” vs “2” Means Nada, Juxtaposed With 56 Years Earlier

Let tangential me get to the point, next week’s clash between the only two college football unbeatens (Ohio State, which ended a 4 game loss skein vs (9-3) Michigan and Indiana, for so long a Big Ten doormat, which ripped Purdue) is an exhibition game and means next to nothing, even in a football/playoffs sense.

This is in sharp contrast, almost the 180 degree kind, with a 1 vs 2 “reg” game, set back to December by ABC, on the advice of my late friend and college football immortal, Beano Cook, exactly 56 years earlier when Texas in route to the title, won a thrilling game vs Arkansas.

So much more to this and I am tired of fighting the money windmills, a 12 team(s) ‘off a prime (as in prime time television, The “wagger” still in this society) so let’s talk then and not now, at least for now.

It was not great all those years that college football only had a mythical national champion. (1998 when Tennessee, beaten decisively by Vanderbilt yesterday, won/”claimed” it, beating Florida State was the first more or less title game).

That mythical aspect, dependent entirely on voting, manifested in one familiar with votes, R.M. Nixon, to arrive in Fayetteville, Arkansa and eventually proclaim Texas as #1, severely irking coach Joe Paterno of also unbeaten, but in ‘el East and certainly without a win, a road one no less, vs a team as good as Arkansas.

At a point, say 1986/1987 after a Jerry Sandusky designed defense “yoked” Vin “turnovers” Testaverde and Miami, adding to Paterno’s “halo status” while conversely less than 5 years after Nixon’s “Texas proclamation,” his status was say 110 degrees lower and apart (110 evoking shade, now a slang for criticism).

Texas still had to beat Notre Dame in the “Cotton” and a diving catch by a “Cotton,” Speyrer, an all-time clutch one keyed themdoing so and claiming the ’69 mythical crown.

Now negative perceptions and relative comparisons have trended Mr. Nixon upward and Paterno, one I saw through before and see as a “Postman Always Rings Twice” type, surely has dropped.

Back to point, so difficult for me as thoughts and history repeats notes fly around, veritable electrons near the atom, next week’s means nada, a shame, a 1 vs 2 while on December 6, 1969, thanks to Beano, “we” saw a classic game that was one of two great Texas wins that gave them the ’69 crown, backed by Nixon and disputed with some but ultimately little justification, by Paterno.

Two things among many in this great memory, (I think I was rooting for Arkansas, but what does that matter?), one is the (male) cheerleader doing a cartwheel on the playing field after Street’s long/must completion to Randy Peschel and the handshakes, not so common then, between some of the opposing players.

Trust me, it was Beano Cook who so often looked at schedule and could think out of the box, that strongly suggested to ABC sports head, Roone Arledge, that the Texas at Arkansas tilt, be moved to December 6th.

Below, Beano is quoted as part of a fine article about the game on its fiftieth anniversary in 2019.

“I never thought we would have such a dramatic game,” said Beano Cook, an ABC producer, in 2009. “It was a perfect game for us.”

Billy Graham prayed before the game and U.S. President Richard Nixon landed in Marine One just after kickoff to watch in person.

All Dogs And Way Too Much Madden, Who was (1-6) In Title Tilts/NFL Semi-Final Games

Has the madness of Madden being stuffed down the society’s collective throats in an act so gluttonous, as to be compared to the day’s manifestations, (eating and repeat eating) ended?

Alone, no jolt despite 4 outright dogs, though the needed, is expressed beautifully in the great Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called To Say I Love You.”

Dust cleared, dishes washed (not really literally or figuratively), G.B. is one plus ahead of Detroit, Chi playing today at champion Philly, is defying and in it.

Dallas is (6-5-1)and at Det (the Lions third straight home tilt) again playing a week after their traditional game the Thursday before, next, while K.C. whose Mahomes kept his balance and got Chiefs’ “weaser-ers” home, is (6-6) already under RSW and quite possibly will miss the ‘offs after a great run which includes 3 titles, 5 Supe appearances and 2 “semis” losses (2018-2024).

At night Burrow returned and Cincy a TD plus u-dog won 32-14 (that the score by which Madden, (1-6) in title games/NFL “semis” won his lone title, at (6-6) Baltimore (Ravens) who still are big faves to win their “div,” though they trail (6-5) Pittsburgh.

6 of 8 Thurs/Fri NFL Games Participants, Won Last Week

A pretty high percentage (75) of the 8 teams playing tomorrow or Friday in NFL tilts won last week.

All four teams in the first two games, Green Bay (Packers) at Detroit (Lions) and K.C. Chiefs at Dallas won last Sunday.

At night, the Baltimore Ravens, who won, face the Cincinnati Bengals who lost to (10-2) (tied with the Rams for the best NFL mark and a TD “fave” vs (2-10) New York Giants (be careful Pats!), New England last week.

Finally, on Friday (Alvin “Pete” Rozelle, a great commissioner save playing on 11/24/63, a day Ruby shot and Killed L.H. Oswald (oh these “3 namers”) warned of over exposure and a game on this day illustrates what it has become, the defending champion Philly Eagles, who dissipated a (21-0) lead going “under” to Dallas (24-21), days back, are a TD “fave” vs the surprising “Chi” Bears, who “long shot lead” the NFC North, by a half “math,” in a 3 team race among the Lions, Packers and Bears—oh my!

Milt Plum is 90 years old and in that (26-14) Lions win vs eventual (14-1) repeat champion Green Bay, one year “before,” in which Roger Brown and the “D”et” “D” “d”ominated, Plum not only threw 2 TD passes to Gail Cogdill but also booted a 47 yard field goal.

Mostly L.A. Team(s) Notes

It is “ridiculously” early in the winter sports seasons and “mucho” time and games remain in “pig,” however, some cities and their current major sports league notes will follow.

Cue Randy Newman, I still “Love L.A”–the song, the memories, but no longer the teams, but oh have those teams achieved and do they loom!

Of course, the Dodgers repeated as baseball title winners becoming just the eighth franchise to do so and in winning a third “5” year crown, they joined the Yankees, who have 7 such, including one 5 and two 4’s and the currently stagnant Cardinals of St. Loo (they won titles in ’26,’46 and 2006 and also in ’34, ’44 and ’64) as teams with at least 3 crowns in a same # year which, (a rhyme) is an obscure note.

Meanwhile, the football L.A. Rams after “ramming” (pun intended) the still “div” leading Tampa Bay Bucs in a “King—night tilt yesterday, now lead the NFC with a (9-2) mark but are just one “math game” ahead of (8-3) Sea (rhyme) while (7-4) SF a TD fave vs (6-5) Carolina (they trail T.B. by a half game going into tonight’s game.

Again, so early in both basketball and the N.H.L. , but note the (12-4) Lakers, (9-4) sans another “would be” king, in his record 23rd season, wearing the # but Leb you ain’t close to being as great as that other “23,” (Mr. Jordan), however you have had a remarkable career and you/the Lakers, also loom.

Later this week some “status/perspective” with Denver, Detroit, Houston and Indiana teams including college sports, where applicable.

“Anns” — With Focus On Who Shot J.R. 45 years Later

Clearly, anniversaries today one 62 years, another which I call “Spardi Day,” exactly 56 and today some insight into great television fiction about a seminal series “Dallas” and another shooting “there” with all it entails.

56 years back near 3 Td underdog Michigan ruined Ohio State’s repeat title hopes, winning (24-12) with “Mich” alum, in totally unlike Joe Davis “homer fashion,” calling the tilt objectively on ABC television.

Yesterday marked another “exact” one, 45 years since it was revealed (Chris Van Hollen “as”) that Kristin, (it was you Kristin that shot J.R. said Linda Gray as “Sue Ellen”) played by Mary Crosby, “binged,” I mean shot J.R.

Below read some recollections by the beautiful, classy, highly intelligent Victoria Principal (“Pam” on “Dallas”) regarding the classic story line and the great Larry Hagman, the iconic J.R. on “Dallas.”

Mannix From 1974 With Carol Lawrence And Paul Burke

Two nights back, it was great to view a 1974 episode of the fine television show, “Mannix,” which starred Mike Connors (a U.C.L.A. basketball player in his day), that presented two great guest stars, Paul Burke and the now 90 plus, sensational Carol Lawrence.

The “ep,” “The Survivor Who Wasn’t,” aired on December 15, 1974, a day on which the then 14 games NFL regular season ended and a surprise party for my parent’s 25th anniversary was held.

I suppose the ratings battle that Sunday night went to ABC, airing Frank Sinatra in “The Main Event” (Mr. Cosell’s intro still reverberates good feelings), not Mannix on CBS.

Ms. Lawrence the original “Maria,” on stage in “West Side Story” is a big favorite of another married couple, Arlene and Jessie, whose “shows experience” is laudatory, extensive and cultured.

Help Me/Us Regarding So Called A.I.

Mr. Travolta walking and dancing, The Bee Gees singing, instead of, or in addition to, somebody help me, somebody help us, as below, is the so called A.I. recitation of NFL game win/loss results from 2 days back.

I “typed” Week 11 NFL scores and this via something called CoPilot appeared in all its glorious inaccuracy!!

Just under half, (3 of 7, I do not need “them” to know it is 42.8 %, are inaccurate!!

  • Giants vs. Packers: Packers won
  • Titans vs. Texans: Titans won
  • Falcons vs. Panthers: Falcons won
  • Vikings vs. Bears: Vikings won
  • Jaguars vs. Chargers: Jaguars won
  • Bills vs. Buccaneers: Bills won
  • Steelers vs. Bengals: Steelers won

For the record the Texans, Panthers and Bears, not the listed opposition winner were victorious!

About 2 minutes in “somebody help me,” more than once I say instead of the N.Y. Times effect on man, these nearly 50 years later the “A.I.” effect on us–another Travolta movie, with the great Olivia Newton John telling John (Travolta) in “Grease,”—“you better shape up.”

It goes for all!!

“What’s My Line” Great Episode

Today an episode of “What’s My Line” called the best contestant ever, that aired on June 1, 1958.

The contestant was the personable Peter J. Lomagistro.

Panelists were Eamonn Andrews and essentially regulars, Arlene Francis, Dorothy Kilgallen and Bennett Cerf.

John Charles Daly was the seminal show’s host.

Remembering The So Accomplished, Classy Lenny Wilkens

In doing the above regarding the great player, coach and classy well spoken man, Lenny Wilkens more than the once record wins and up there with the ’79 title that warms in the Sea/Tor “cold” it is a recollection of certain great college basketball, just before my time–within it, Lenny getting through and performing in such great fashion for Providence College.

Of course the coaching, taking over a (5-17) Seattle Super Sonics team in ’78 from Bob Hoskins (ode to the actor with that name) and going to #7 of the final before losing to the Bullets and after an N.I.T. final and NBA such loss in consecutive years (’60 and ’61), the title in 5 vs the Bullets won on a Friday night in 1979.

Lenny teamed with the great baseball hitter, Tommy Davis with Boy’s High under legendary coach Mickey Fisher, recalled on my “Tribute to Marty Glickman” show by the journalist, Dick Schaap.

So Lenny go down the lane or as Marty reminded, “across it,” and find those greats and others, secure in the knowledge of your greatness and contributions while on this planet.

Oh to have been able to play–penetrate, assist and much more, as the great Lenny Wilkens, pictured above.
