Some St. Louis Cardinals’ Notes

March 16, 2025

The St. Louis Cardinals, for the first time perceived to be the worst team in their 1/8 division, have won 11 titles, second only to the New York Yankees, who have 27 such crowns.

In both 1964 and 1967 the Cards won huge road games on the actual Columbus Day, October 12th.

It was game 5 in 1964 when the Cards behind Bob Gibson led (2-0) going to the bottom of the ninth at Yankee Stadium.

However, Tom Tresh who had homered off Sandy Koufax in the Dodgers (5-2) win in the ’63 World Series opener, hit a far more important, somewhat incredible game tying 2RHR off Gibson.

St. Loo by another (5-2) score won the game and eventually the title in 7 games.

In ’67, the game “for all the marbles” (#7 World Series) was on October 12th. Gibson who won with a complete game, (7-5) in #7/’64, won (7-2) at venerable Fenway Park to gain their second crown in 4 seasons.

Julian Javier, pictured above, had the more or less “wrap up” home run in game 7 of the 1967 World Series.
