Reverse Outcomes In 6 Of The 8 “Semis Or Later” Rematches In The NFL’s 2nd Week
Sunday’s post cited there were seven “semis” and one Supe rematch played or to be played in the second week of the 2024 NFL season.
In those eight tilts, the losing team in the “semi” or later game won the exponentially less important second week game.
Only Buffalo repeating its ’92 AFC title tilt/NFL “semi” win also at Miami and the Green Bay Packers winning also at home, as they did vs the then Baltimore Colts in the unscheduled ’65 Western Conference ‘off/NFL “semi” repeated their “semis” or later victories.
Seattle won in overtime at N.E. reversing the outcome of the Pats Supe win nearly 10 years ago.
Additionally in same venue, at least city rematches, different outcomes manifested as Atlanta won at Philadelphia last night (Kirk Cousins, playing in his third straight season, at Philly, second week night tilt, one Thursday and 2 Monday, also reversed those losses, driving “Atl” 70 yards for the tying T.D.- which with the longer XP, put the Falcons ahead to stay in the last minute of play), and 2 time defending champion and (2-0) Kansas City (Chiefs) (-6) (26-25) vs (0-2) Cincinnati (Bengals).
In rematches in the other city, “reverses” were (1-1) “Wash” kicking 7 field goals to (21-18) the (0-2) Giants, whose kicker (Gano) was hurt, costing valuable points, Pittsburgh winning at Denver and as Catalon noted on air, in a “survivor pool destroyer,” 9 point “dog” Las Vegas (Raiders) beat (0-2) Balti near Chesapeake Bay.
There is much to be said regarding memories from this tilt but for now it is film of Don Chandler’s tying field goal that led to overtime and an eventual (13-10) Pack win vs the Colts (days back it was a (16-10) win) and a week later the first of 3 straight Packer’s crowns (23-12) vs Cleveland in the great Cleveland player, Jim Brown’s last game as a Cleveland Brown. (A Pro Bowl followed and within a year on the set of the seminal film, “The Dirty Dozen,” Jim announced his retirement and unlike so many stayed retired.
Notice the Chandler attempt appeared to be no good, but …….
A great broadcaster, long with Baltimore’s Colts and Orioles, Chuck Thompson is the narrator.
