Please be more precise, ESPN.com

December 23, 2015

In his ninth season, Sparty’s head man has the program positioned to win its first title since 1966.

The above is from ESPN.com and a former ESPN employee, Beano Cook already rolling, is going topsy turvy in his grave (hopefully my dear friend is in a better place hanging out with most of the cast of “Casablanca”) at this shoddy, typical reporting of his former company.
A big reason if not the biggest, that Mr. Cook rooted hard vs Notre Dame is the plethora of times they were given minimum, disputed national titles, one year being 1966.
The reporting should read Michigan State is positioned (are they positioned as 7 to 1 underdogs, happen to think they have a great chance but at this point they are not “positioned” but that may be a “nit pick”) to win their first consensus title since 1952 when they “titled” in both major wire service polls.
After Notre Dame and Michigan State played a (10-10) tie in a beyond built up tilt in 1966, (Notre Dame coach Ara Paraseghian playing for the tie, late in the game), Notre Dame ripped USC and though Alabama with the great Ken Stabler at quarterback won its bowl game to finish, undefeated, untied the big prize Associated Press and I believe most others was given to Notre Dame.

The great Charles “Bubba” Smith pictured above played on that 1966 Michigan State team that won some title honors but not either major wire service honor.
