Thaksgiving Holiday/NFL Perspective

November 22, 2012

In a post from September 12th, I talked of the success enjoyed that first week of the season by the six teams who were all scheduled to play on Thanksgiving. They all won their opening games. Though those teams went (5-1) last week, the six teams enter the three turkey day games with mixed results so far this season.

The Houston Texans and New England Patriots enjoy very comfortable divisional leads but their opponents, the Detroit Lions and New York Jets respectively, each enter their home game today with a (4-6) record. The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, who clash today in Dallas on the 49th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in that city, have a combined record that is under the .500 mark.

I have mixed feelings about all the football today as well as Thanksgiving in general. Surely, I will reflect on 49 years ago today and what might have been. I also will think about helping others and myself to improve the “micro” and “macro” situations in the year ahead. My mind will return to the most famous Thanksgiving game when Roger Brown and the Lions upset the Green Bay Packers in 1962. That was the only loss for Vince Lombardi’s Packers that year as they repeated as NFL champions. So make new memories, reflect and truly appreciate what you have. Happy holiday to all.
